A small container for medicines to be placed in and worn around the waist. Popular in the Edo period. It was usually made in a small, flat container with three, four, or five layers of compartments, and a string was threaded through the holes on both sides to connect them. A netsuke is attached to the ends of the strings extending from the shoulders of the lid, and the opening and closing of each tier is adjusted by an ojime attached between the two.
