    Description

1st known contingent patches with Cavalcade Horse Trek, Kanik Winter trek and Double H Trek for Philmont Scout Ranch
1991 Philmont Scout Ranch Kanik OA Contingent CSP Longhorn Council (black border
In only its second year of offering a winter program, First Known Philmont Kanik Contingent CSP is highlighted by the celebration of the 150
    th
Anniversary of the Maxwell Land Grant.
Philmont issued instructions on a special logo celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Maxwell Grant, Woaplanne Chapter organized a “Kanik” winter survival training trip that had OA Scouts from 5 different Troops attend, A video was shot and played on local Cable Television and they learned how to cross country ski in the area of Cathedral Rock. The 7 color
    3 inch by 5 inch
patch provides the likeness of Maxwell, a multi-colored arrow and the familiar Tooth of Time landmark featured at Philmont Scout Ranch.
Now that the winter program name has changed from Kanik "Winter Adventure," this patch becomes an even greater collectible because it was the first known Kanik contingent CSP. Its always a great pick up to get the first of anything
    1997 OA Philmont Cavalcade
First known 2 piece Philmont Cavalcade CSP patch issue. This 1997 trip was both a Philmont Cavalcade and a religious pilgrimage to holy sites in New Mexico. Upon completion of the Cavalcade, Scouts departed on a religious pilgrimage to Santa Fe as part of the requirements for the Ad Altare Dei Award. The 6 color CSP represents the Tooth of Time Philmont Cavalcade destination and the top portion of San Miguel Mission in Santa Fe, NM. The bottom patch provides the bottom portion of San Miguel Mission, the horse (representing Philmont Cavalcade) and the familiar cactus found everywhere in New Mexico. “97 Philmont” is found in the brown pillar, “Cavalcade” in the outer wall and “Woapalanne” under the doorway as ghosted evidence of OA participation.
The Catholic Committee on Scouting offered this unique opportunity for any eligible Scouts in Longhorn Council.
2004 Philmont Scout Ranch Double H Trek Charter Year Contingent Patch
First known Philmont Double H Contingent Patch (very limited number). Scouts of Longhorn Council were offered a chance to participate in a Philmont Double H Trek during its Charter Year in 2004. A local unit had several Scouts drop out and could not meet its minimum Double H Trek quota for the new Philmont property. Our Troop had several Scouts join to “make” the Trek and ensure the experience for all those wishing to try this first year program. There were no real trails, you made your own trek and all Double H participants were required to use GPS technology.
The bottom portion of this 2 inch by 4 inch 6 color patch was designed to combine with the regular Longhorn Council CSP to complete a 2 piece patch. “LCBSA” represents Longhorn Council BSA and Charter Year accentuates how this was the first year of all Double H Treks. Because it was the Charter Year, and because the Double H is no longer a Philmont program, the value of this collectible will only grow far into the future.
The Philmont horse brand found in the New Mexico sun, the Double H logo of the tree and moose and the flag of the State of Texas make this a unique Philmont collectible.
